Though college is now a rite of passage for so many Americans, safety is a major concern, especially concerning the events of recent years. Business Insider used facts from the website Niche to put together a list of the country's safest campuses, as of 2016. Schools were ranked on a scale from A+ to F, in the categories of health and safety, drug safety, and party scene. Take a look.
15. Biola University, La Mirada, CaliforniaBiola University/Facebook
Biola scored high in the health and safety, as well as drug safety categories, earning both an A and A+ respectively. Though their party scene was given a C, the Christian college's "ban on alcohol prevents a lot of crime," according to one student. In addition to "Campus Safety [working] in conjunction with the nearby sheriff's department," this contributes to the school's high rating.
14. Penn State Lehigh Valley, Center Valley, PennsylvaniaPenn State Lehigh Valley/Facebook
This university's lack of on-campus housing might contribute to its ratings (A for health and safety, N/A for drug safety, and B- for the party scene). The fact of the matter is, these ratings can't account for what students are doing in their own homes though.
13. Molloy College, Rockville Centre, New YorkMolloy College/Facebook
The New York college has a high rating for both health and safety and drug safety, and it scored pretty well for its party scene too. An alumnus noted that it's very easy to "[connect] to public safety. And they round at night and always check empty classrooms!" According to a freshman, they're sure to monitor any underage drinking that occurs at parties.
12. St. Joseph's College at New York, Brooklyn, New YorkSt. Joseph's College NY/Facebook
Campus security is active at Brooklyn's commuter college, according to students. The school has been rated A for health and safety, A+ for drug safety, and B- for the party scene.
11. New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury, New YorkWikimedia Commons
NYIT is "located in two different police jurisdictions," giving students extra confidence that any problem they might have will be responded to expediently. The school earned high marks in health and safety and drug safety, but it was rated average for the party scene.
10. Brigham Young University at Idaho, Rexburg, IdahoBYU-Idaho/Facebook
The Mormon university prides itself on faith-based prohibitions of alcohol and drugs, and, as a sophomore wrote, "Other safety hazards will get you kicked out of school." BYU-Idaho has an A+ in both health and safety and drug safety, and a C grade for its party scene.
9. Menlo College, Atherton, CaliforniaMenlo College
California's Menlo College doesn't have an applicable grade for its drug safety, but it scored the top mark for health and safety, and a B- for the party scene. The 24/7 security presence on the campus helps to maintain a safe environment and they "always pick up their phones," according to a student.
8. Wheaton College at Illinois, Wheaton, IllinoisWheaton College/Facebook
While Wheaton earned the highest grades for both health and safety, and drug safety, its party scene sank a little in the ratings, earning a D+. It makes sense though, as drugs and alcohol are both banned on the religious campus. One student mentioned that there are, of course, "students who drink or do drugs, but it is by no means pervasive or out of control," though the ones who do participate in those activities often seek them out.
7. Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, New YorkRoberts Wesleyan College/Facebook
This too is a school that scored an A+ for health and safety, as well as drug safety. Their party scene earned a C+. Students aren't allowed to possess drugs or alcohol, most of which follow this rule. The school also has security available 24/7.
6. Huntington University, Huntington, IndianaHuntington University/Facebook
Awarded an A+ for both health and safety, and drug safety, Huntington has a good amount of resources in place, such as "many lights and emergency contact phones," says one student. Though the party scene was rated a C-, the school has ensured all buildings now have electronic key cards.
5. Whitworth University, Spokane, WashingtonWhitworth University/Facebook
Whitworth has also been given an A+ for health and safety and drug safety. Their party scene, though, received a B-. According to students of Whitworth, they don't really feel pressured into substance usage, and one student mentioned that, though they acknowledge instances have likely occurred at some point, "Students regularly leave their laptops unattended for extended periods of time and nothing ever happens."
4. Corban University, Salem, OregonCorban University/Facebook
This university actually has the exact same scores as Whitworth, and though it's located rather close to a prison, the students are kept safe through 24/7 campus security. The number for security is in a handy spot too, on the back of student ID cards.
3. Regent University, Virginia Beach, VirginiaRegent University/Facebook
According to students, the campus feels very safe, and similarly to some of the other schools on this list, it's a dry campus. One student claims there is "little if [any] drug and alcohol use among students." They were given an A+ for health and safety, and drug safety, and a C for the party scene.
2. Summit University, Clarks Summit, PennsylvaniaSummit University/Facebook
Summit boasts the same scores as Regent, and the security is said to be very personable on campus. One student noted that, "The head of security takes the time to get to know each and every student personally."
1. Brigham Young University, Provo, UtahBYU (Brigham Young University)/Facebook
BYU was given an A+ for health and safety and drug safety and a C+ for its party scene. It is the safest school on this list. The students are made to feel safe and comfortable, says one student, and they tend to take little issue with the prohibitions against drugs and alcohol. Another student notes, "BYU provides an extremely safe environment for people of all ages, gender, and race."
