Kamryn Renfro is a 9-year-old girl who lives in Grand Junction, Colorado. Kamryn's best friend is Delany Campbell. Delany is 11 years old and has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Her treatments have been very difficult and she's had to go through several rounds of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy has caused Delany to lose her hair twice. Fighting cancer and looking different are very difficult for kids, so Kamryn decided to stand by her friend by shaving her head so she would be bald too.
Delany was delighted by Kamryn's gesture. When Kamryn returned to school on Monday after shaving her head over the weekend, the school sent her back home. Kamryn was told that having a shaved head was against the dress code of the school and that she couldn't return until her hair grew back. Outraged, her family and friends posted about the situation on social media and the backlash against the school was incredible.
Kamryn's story began appearing on news outlets around the country and the school was besieged by angry people, demanding they allow Kamryn back in school. Eventually school administrators reversed their decision and allowed Kamryn back in school, but not before her story went viral. Kamryn appeared on shows like the "TODAY" show, where she talked about her friend Delany and what it was like to do make such a sacrifice for a friend.
The Whole Story
In this video you can see Kamryn tell her story about her experience. She is happy that the attention surrounding her suspension has brought awareness to Delany's battle with cancer and she's proud of standing up for her friend. We definitely need more kids like Kamryn in the world.
